Chippewas Drop MAC Softball Doubleheader

KENT, Ohio -- The Central Michigan softball team fell to 0-3 in the Mid-American Conference on Saturday, dropping both games of a doubleheader with Kent State.
Janel Hayes tossed a five-hitter to lead the Golden Flashes to a 4-0 victory in game one, and Ronnie Ladines blanked the Chippewas on six hits as Kent State took the nightcap, 9-0.
CMU's record slips to 13-14 on the season. Kent State moves to 20-7, 3-0 MAC.
CMU will return to action on Wednesday, traveling to East Lansing for a non-conference matchup with in-state rival Michigan State. The Chippewas play host to Akron in a three-game MAC series next weekend.
Junior Rachael Knapp (7-7) took the loss in game one on Saturday. She allowed two runs on three hits, struck out two and walked five over two innings.
Hanna Warren started and took the loss in the nightcap. She went 4 1/3 innings, allowing four earned runs on four hits, while walking three and striking out three.
Laura Vaccaro pitched in relief for CMU in both games, giving up one run on four hits over four innings in game one, and four runs on five hits in one inning in the nightcap.
Allison Curtis, Katelyn Rentschler, Chelsea DeLamielleure, Sara Hansen and Maison Kalina each had a hit for CMU in the opener.
Lacy Tolfree had two hits to lead CMU in the nightcap, while Curtis, CarolAnn Sexauer, Katelyn Rentschler and Rachel Vieira had one each.
Holly Speers homered in both games to lead the Golden Flashes at the plate, while Maddy Grimm homered twice in the nightcap.
