CINCINNATI - Cincinnati outscored Central Michigan, 6-1, in the second half Sunday in handing the Chippewas a 14-5 loss in a non-conference women's lacrosse game.
The Chippewas (1-2) play host to Delaware State on Friday (3 p.m.) in the first home lacrosse game in CMU history. They entertain Virgina Commonwealth next Sunday (1 p.m.). Cincinnati improved to 4-2.
Anna Schoonover scored two goals to lead the Chippewas. Auguste Jepsen, Summer Abdalla and Kaitlin Kimble added a goal apiece. Riley Huda had an assist.
Sarah Del Bene and Elaina Enich scored four goals each for the Bearcats, who outshot the Chippewas, 33-11.
CMU goalie Dominique Hamman made 12 saves.
Schoonover scored with 20 seconds remaining in the first half and Jepsen tallied in the first minute of the second to draw CMU to 8-5.
Del Bene scored just over a minute later, and the Bearcats scored the game's final five goals to pull away.
"The first 30 minutes we were able to execute everything we had hoped to do," CMU coach Sara Tisdale said. "We played a great first half. It was within our grasp, but we couldn't convert and turn that corner beyond that 8-5 margin."
Tisdale said she was pleased with her team's performance considering that the program is in its first year, and the roster comprises all freshmen and one sophomore.
"Without question, if we think, 'Third ever collegiate game,' we did not look that way, we did not look like a first-year program," she said. "There were times where we showed our inexperience, but we're thrilled with where we go from here.
"Our first-half shot selection was really good. We shot 100 percent in the first half and I don't think I've ever been able to say that. That was a great effort in moving the ball and taking high quality shots.
"Defensively we hung in there and played a full 60 minutes and never gave up."
