AKRON, Ohio - Cold bats make for a short stay in the league tournament.
The Central Michigan softball team managed just two hits Thursday in bowing out of the Mid-American Conference Tournament with a 2-0 loss to Western Michigan.
The Chippewas finished 24-27-1. CMU did not score a run in its two games in the tourney, falling to top-seeded Kent State, 1-0, on Wednesday.
CMU had four hits in that loss and hit just .122 (6-for-49) during its short stay at Akron's Firestone Field.
Western Michigan scored both of its runs in the third inning, getting an RBI double from Erin Binkowski and a run-scoring single from Gabby Schefka.
The Broncos collected seven hits off losing pitcher Rachael Knapp (14-14), who struck out 11 and walked two.
Allyson Kus (16-15) struck out seven for the victory.
The Chippewa hits came from Lacy Tolfree and Katelyn Rentschler. Tolfree singled leading off the first inning and Rentschler had a one-out single in the seventh.
Rachel Vieira was hit by a pitch after Rentschler's seventh-inning single, putting two on with two out. Taylor Lewallen struck out to end the game.
Western Michigan (22-27) will play either Miami (Ohio) or Ohio on Friday morning in an elimination game.
