MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Central Michigan quarterback Cooper Rush was named to the Maxwell Award watch list on Tuesday.
The award, now in its 80th year, goes to the college football's player of the year.
Rush, a senior from Charlotte, was one of 90 players named to the list. He is one of four on the list who represent a Mid-American Conference school.
Rush, who moved into the starting lineup early in his freshman year, has developed into one of the most prolific passers in Chippewa history. He completed 66.3 percent of his passes for a CMU-record 3,848 yards and 25 touchdowns last season, leading CMU to a share of the MAC West title and a berth in the Quick Lane Bowl.
He earned Second Team All-MAC honors in 2015 and two weeks ago was named to the Athlon Sports All-MAC preseason second-team offense.
Semifinalists will be announced on Oct. 31, and three finalists will be announced on Nov. 21. The winner will be named on Dec. 8 as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show.
The award, which is presented by the Philadelphia-based Maxwell Football Club, is named in honor of Robert "Tiny" Maxwell, whose contributions to the game as a player, sportswriter and official were extensive. The award has been handed out every year since 1937.
The other MAC representatives on the list are Western Michigan wide receiver Corey Davis, Northern Illinois running back Joel Bouagnon, and Toledo running back Kareem Hunt.
The Chippewas open the season at home on Thursday, Sept. 1, against Presbyterian.
