Chippewas complete final of 15 spring scrimmage on warm, sunny evening at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich.—Central Michigan Football wrapped up its 2026 spring ball schedule with an action-packed spring scrimmage on Tuesday evening at sunny Kramer/Deromedi Field at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.
Tuesday's scrimmage was the final of 15 spring practices for the Chippewas, who opened practice on March 17. Central Michigan welcomed 98 players to spring practice, including 39 newcomers. The Chippewas return 13 players who made starts last year and a host of others who saw extensive action in 2025.
The 90-minute scrimmage featured 46 offensive snaps. Central Michigan head coach Matt Drinkall was pleased with the results both today and through spring ball.
"It was a good day with perfect weather," Drinkall said. "It was short, fast, and we had super fan engagement with a great turnout from families and alumni. We had 125 alumni in our player suite behind us. We made it out injury-free and got a lot of material on tape."
"I'm happy with our progress coming out of spring practices. 54 percent of our roster is brand-new. Getting our procedural pieces out of the way heading into the summer was key for us this spring, and it went well."
Central Michigan's offense scored three touchdowns, highlighted by a 32-yard pass from quarterback Marcus Beamon to running back Trav Moore, a 17-yard touchdown run by Geno Seets, and an explosive eight-yard touchdown run by John Stowers. Stowers electrified the fans with the game's most memorable moment, attempting to leap over a defender on a rushing attempt. Angel Flores, Marcus Beamon, Daniel Gomez, and Geno Seets all saw action at quarterback for the Chippewas.
Central Michigan's defense registered three pass breakups, five tackles for loss, and forced one fumble.
The Chippewa special teams delivered a strong performance, with placekicker Caden VanHuis converting all of his field goal attempts and punters Declan Duley and Zac Chapeau showcasing their skill in windy conditions.
"Even though we have a bunch of new guys, they're Central Michigan kind of guys, tough, smart people, really good dudes that are aligned with how everything functions here," Drinkall said. "They've come in and hit the ground running with all phases of their lives and our program and have really done a fantastic job. The staff has done a great job supporting those guys as well."
"It was a concern a year ago, going into week one against San Jose State, there weren't too many snaps collectively on our offensive unit. We have a lot of depth and players that we're happy about on offense, and guys who can help the offense in a lot of different ways. Now we're in the exact opposite situation on defense. Defensively, we are probably where we were last year offensively. You're seeing on defense that we've lost a bunch of veterans, Michael Heldman, Jordan Kwiatkowski, Dakota Cochran, Caleb Spann, Elijah Rikard, and Lawai'a Brown—who played a ton of football here."
