MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - The Central Michigan lacrosse team was named an academic honor squad by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association.
CMU, in its first year as a varsity sport during the 2016 season, was one of 275 schools representing all levels in the NCAA and NAIA to be so honored.
In order to be named an academic honor squad, a team must have posted a 3.0 or higher team grade point average for the 2015-16 academic year.
"Receiving this award falls right in line in our Championship Culture - it shows that is isn't just on-field," CMU coach Sara Tisdale said. "I think our ladies have really done a great job of being dedicated to their academic success as well as the role that they play in the community.
"In those two aspects, I couldn't have asked for a better outcome in what we have hoped to achieve."
Tisdale said the award was particularly gratifying in light of the fact that the Chippewas' cumulative GPA increased in the spring, 2016 semester - when CMU played its first season as a varsity team -- as compared to the fall, 2015 semester.
"With playing in the Atlantic Sun Conference and the traveling we do (in the spring), I think that really speaks to them putting their academics first and making that a high priority," she said.
