MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Central Michigan's Marcus Keene picked up three awards on Monday in the wake of his 50-point performance in a victory over Miami (Ohio).
Keene, a junior guard in his first year at CMU after transferring from Youngstown State, was named the Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week, the American Sports Network Player of the Week, and the Lou Henson Award National Player of the Week.
Keene's 50-point outburst on Saturday in the Chippewas' 101-92 win over the RedHawks is the third-highest total in program history, and it broke the McGuirk Arena record of 43 points set 10 days earlier by Presley Hudson of the CMU women's team. It marked the seventh-highest scoring game in MAC men's basketball history.
Keene, who had 29 points in the Chippewas' 98-83 loss Ball State last Wednesday, averaged 39.5 points, 5.5 assists, 2.5 steals and 2.0 rebounds in CMU's two games last week
His 10 3-pointers against Miami tied the program record, and his eight at Ball State set a standard for a visiting player at the Cardinals' Worthen Arena.
Keene's performance against Miami on Saturday was nothing short of remarkable. He made 65 percent (15-of-23) of his field goal attempts overall, 67 percent (10-of-15) of his 3-point attempts, and 100 percent (10-for-10) of his free throw tries. He scored 26 consecutive points in a span of 5:52, hitting five 3-pointers while going 7-for-7 from the line, to reverse a deficit and put the Chippewas in the lead for good.
Keene leads the MAC in 3-pointers with 74 (seventh nationally) and free throws made with 125 (sixth nationally) and ranks second in assists per game (5.3).
Also on Monday, Keene was named to the midseason watch list for the Oscar Robertson Trophy, which goes to the national player of the year in college basketball.
It marks the fourth time that Keene, a 5-foot-9 guard who hails from San Antonio, Texas, has earned MAC West Player of the Week honors, and the second time he has been so honored by ASN.
