MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl matchup is just the start of a renewed relationship for Central Michigan and Wyoming's football teams. The Chippewas and Cowboys will play a home-and-home series in 2026 and 2027.
The Cowboys, members of the Mountain West Conference, will visit Kelly/Shorts Stadium on Sept. 19, 2026. The Chippewas will visit War Memorial Stadium in Laramie, Wyoming, on Sept. 4, 2027. The games were finalized last week.
"Mountain West Conference schools touch every corner of the West and reach a broad base of fans," CMU Associate Vice President and Director of Athletics Michael Alford said. "We welcome a return to the high plains of Wyoming, and CMU fans will want to see the Cowboys when they come to Mount Pleasant."
CMU is 1-1 all time against the Cowboys. The Chippewas lost, 31-10, at Wyoming on Sept. 16, 2000, then beat the Cowboys, 32-20, at Kelly/Shorts Stadium on Sept. 7, 2002. And now, of course, the teams will meet in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl on Dec. 22 in Albertsons Stadium in Boise, Idaho.
The bowl game pits the Cowboys (7-5 overall, 5-3 in the Mountain West Conference) against CMU (8-4, 6-2 Mid-American Conference), which finished the regular season with a five-game winning streak. Both teams feature strong defenses. CMU leads the FBS in turnovers gained with 31 and Wyoming is tied for second with 30. The Chippewas are tied for ninth in the nation in fumbles recovered with 12. Wyoming is tied for fourth with 14.
"It's hard to imagine a matchup nine, 10 years from now, but I like what I see out of Wyoming now - a solid team that is getting better in a tough conference," CMU football coach John Bonamego said. "We know we'll have our hands full in Boise."
CMU fans can ensure they will sit among Chippewa fans at the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl by purchasing bowl tickets by Friday by calling 989-774-1921 or ordering online at cmuchippewas.com.
