
Chippewas Win Two In Florida

MADIERA BEACH, Fla. - The Central Michigan softball team pounded out 25 hits Saturday in winning two games at the Madiera Beach Invitational.
The Chippewas opened the day with a 4-3 win over Robert Morris and closed with an 11-0 run-rule win over UMass. CMU (3-6) closes the invitational on Sunday (9 a.m.) against Siena (0-4).
Rachel Vieira hit a two-run homer and Erika Underwood hit a solo shot to highlight CMU's 18-hit explosion against UMass (2-2).
Cleanup hitter Maison Kalina had three hits including a double, and Taylor Lewallen also had three hits to lead CMU at the plate. Vieira, Morgan Gardner, Lacy Tolfree and Kaila Fulker added two hits each.
Tolfree, Maison and Vieira each finished with two RBI.
Rachael Knapp went the distance for the shutout victory, her second straight, as she improved to 2-3. The senior right-hander allowed four hits and struck out eight. She allowed just one hit, a sixth-inning single, after the third inning. Knapp tossed a two-hit gem in CMU's 1-0 victory on Friday over North Dakota.
Sara Hansen had two hits and Vieira doubled to lead the Chippewas past Robert Morris (1-6).
CMU broke a 2-2 with two runs in the third inning. Hansen singled with one out, moved up on a groundout and scored on an error. Vieira then delivered a run-scoring double.
CMU starter Taylor Weaver (1-0) picked up the victory, allowing two runs on one hit with one walk and two strikeouts over three innings. Hanna Warren went the final four frames, surrendering a run on four hits while striking out five and walking two.
