RICHMOND, Va. - Freshman attacker Emma Hamilton started and finished the scoring for the Central Michigan lacrosse team Sunday, but the Chippewas fell short against Virginia Commonwealth, 15-9.
VCU built a 7-0 lead in the first 18 minutes and held CMU scoreless until Hamilton took a pass from Anna Schoonover and scored with 8:15 to play in the first half.
"We were missing a couple of key players due to a sudden illness, and that took the wind out of our sails a little bit," CMU coach Sara Tisdale said.
VCU, 3-3, outshot the Chippewas, 36-27, and had more shots on goal, 28-19.
VCU extended its lead in the second half to 15-4 with 10:25 left in the game. Five of CMU's six second-half goals came in the final 5:27, and Hamilton had the last two, giving her four goals on the season.
"We need to learn from this, not allow outside situations to affect us," Tisdale said. "We had two freshman players step up and make some plays today. Natalie Karlen played well and asked to take draws, and Emma Hamilton played with confidence."
Sophomore midfielders Jocelyne Lemay and Riley Huda both scored twice and had an assist. Karlen, an attacker, had a goal and an assist, and freshman midfielder Tyra Prince scored her fourth goal of the season. The Chippewas, 1-3, are at home Sunday in a noon nonconference game against Cincinnati.
