SETTING THE SCENE
The Central Michigan volleyball team faces a tough challenge this weekend as they head to Notre Dame for the Shamrock Invitational at Purcell Pavilion.
The Chippewas (7-2) are slated to take on Southern Illinois on Friday (4:30 p.m.) to open the tournament. They close the tournament on Saturday against Michigan State (10 a.m.) and then Notre Dame (7 p.m.).
Second-year CMU coach Mike Gawlik was an assistant at Michigan State for 11 years before coming to CMU prior to the 2016 season.
LAST WEEK
CMU finished 2-1 last weekend in their own Chippewa Invitational. Central Michigan rallied from a two-set deficit to beat Indiana State in five sets to open the tournament. They dropped a three-set match to Cleveland State, and then bounced back to seize the 3-0 sweep over IUPUI to close the weekend.
LEADERS
Senior Jordan Bueter brought the fire to the Chippewas at the invitational, setting a rally-scoring record for most kills (23) and most attacks (52) in a three-set match in the victory over IUPUI.
Bueter and teammate Taylor Robertson were named to the all-tournament team.
Bueter leads the Chippewas with 167 kills, while Robertson and Lyza Myers are tied for second with 78. Bueter was named the MAC West Offensive Player of the Week after her performance in the Chippewa Invitational, during which she averaged 5.91 kills per set.
Bueter leads the MAC in kills and kills per set (4.91) and ranks fourth in aces per set (0.38).
Chippewa setter Grace Butler, a freshman, is averaging a MAC-best 10.73 assists per set.
Robertson is seventh in the league with 0.91 blocks per set, while the Chippewas' Megan Kern is sixth in the MAC with 4.29 digs per set. Kern is eighth in the conference with 0.35 aces per set. She has 12 on the season.
CMU ranks first in the MAC in assists per set (12.65) and is second in kills per set (13.41).
SCOUTING REPORT
Southern Illinois is 1-7. The Salukies defeated Southeast Missouri State in five sets on Tuesday for their first win.
Michigan State (5-1), which is ranked 23rd, did not drop a set in sweeping all three of its matches in the Auto-Owners Insurance Spartan Invitational on its home court at Jenison Field House two weeks ago. MSU faced San Diego State, Marshall and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the tournament.
The Spartans' only loss was a 3-1 decision against Georgia Tech on the Yellow Jackets' home court on Aug. 26.
The balanced Spartans are led by Autumn Bailey (53 kills), Alyssa Garvelink (52), Holly Toliver (51) and Brooke Kranda (49).
Notre Dame is 7-1 with its lone loss coming to 25th-ranked Ohio State. Jemma Yeadon leads the Irish with 99 kills.
