FAIRFAX, Va. - Jordan Bueter collected 38 kills on Saturday as the Central Michigan volleyball team won its final two matches in the George Mason Invitational.
CMU's victories came on the heels of a four-set loss on Friday to Penn. The Chippewas are off to their first 5-1 start since 2008. They opened on Saturday with 3-0 victory over Campbell, and followed with a 3-1 win over the host Patriots.
"We came out ready to play from the get-go," CMU coach Mike Gawlik said. "We put a lot of pressure on Campbell. We really executed our plan and had the focus on our side."
CMU topped Campbell 25-15, 25-22, 25-15, and then defeated George Mason, 25-20, 25-16, 24-26, 25-20.
Bueter led the Chippewas with 15 kills on a .361 hitting percentage against the Camels. She also added five digs. She had 23 kills on a .360 hitting percentage against George Mason.
"Jordan had a great two matches back to back," Gawlik said. "We shared the offensive load more today. We had more attackers and really executed our plan. Jordan still had a big night, but we had some good contributions all-around offensively as well.
"I thought we played two really great matches that bounced us back from an average match (on Friday). We were really challenged and I'm proud we came out with wins against two strong opponents."
Also for the Chippewas against Campbell, Taylor Robertson had nine kills, setter Grace Butler finished with 34 assists, and Megan Kern led the Chippewa defense with 12 digs.
Against George Mason, Paige Carey and Lyza Myers added nine kills apiece for the Chippewas, Butler finished with 36 assists and 12 digs, and Kern paced CMU with 19 digs.
Myers was named to the all-tournament team.
The 2-1 finish came after the Chippewas finished 3-0 in the season-opening Army Invitational last week. CMU makes its home debut next weekend when it welcomes Indiana State, Cleveland State and IUPUI for the Chippewa Invitational.
"We knew we'd be playing some tougher teams every week," Gawlik said. "It's an opportunity to test ourselves and we're focusing each game at a time."
