MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Akron scored in the 85th minute Friday in forging a 1-1 tie with Central Michigan in a Mid-American Conference soccer match at the CMU Soccer-Lacrosse Stadium.
Lexi Pelafas gave CMU a 1-0 lead just eight minutes into the game off a Savannah Beetcher assist. It was Pelafas' team-leading eighth goal of the season.
CMU (5-4-2, 0-2-1 MAC) will look to pick up its first conference win when it plays host to Buffalo (4-5-1, 2-1) on Sunday (noon).
"There's a little bit of frustration for us not to capitalize early in the game and find a second goal," CMU coach Peter McGahey said. "We could've done a better job putting the accelerator down in the first half. Credit to Akron for making our life difficult."
Central Michigan maintained its 1-0 lead until under six minute remained in regulation time. Ashley Amato scored off of a corner kick to tie it.
"It's fairly demoralizing," said McGahey. "You basically lead for what amounts to the better part of 80 minutes and now all of a sudden it's torn away from you. Re-finding that energy can be quite difficult, but the team did a good job of it."
Chippewa goalkeeper Zoie Reed made four saves. Akron keeper Amani Jiu had six.
Central Michigan had the edge in shots, 13-9, including 7-6 in shots on goal. The shots were an even 4-4 in the overtime periods.
