SETTING THE SCENE
• The Central Michigan volleyball team will host and participate in the Chippewa Invitational this weekend at McGuirk Arena. Indiana State, Cleveland State and IUPUI round out the tournament field. It is the home-opener for CMU.
• The Chippewas will open on Friday with a matchup against Indiana State (noon) then is scheduled to play Cleveland State (7:30 p.m.). The Sycamores (1-6) have not won a game since their season-opener against DePaul. Cleveland State is 3-3.
• CMU will take on IUPUI (3-5) on Saturday (5 p.m.) to close the weekend.
LAST WEEK
• Central Michigan finished 2-1 at the George Mason Invitational last weekend after dropping its match against Penn, 3-1, to open the tournament. The Chippewas defeated Campbell, 3-0; and then topped George Mason, 3-1.
TOURNEY STANDOUT
• CMU's Jordan Bueter earned tournament Most Valuable Player Award and teammate Lyza Meyers was named to the all-tournament team.
• Bueter was also named the Mid-American Conference West Division Offensive Player of the Week for her efforts in the George Mason Invitational. She posted 52 kills and averaged 5.23 points per set.
CMU FACTS
• Bueter leads the team with 102 kills for the season. Paige Carey is second with 56.
• With her four aces in the tournament, Bueter moved into fourth place in program history with 128 for her career. That number is tops in Chippewa lore since 2000, when the move was made to rally scoring.
NICE START
• At 5-1, CMU is off to its best start since 2008.
• "The chemistry is better than a year ago, I think our buy-in is better than a year ago, our familiarity, with all the things that a new coaching staff brings to the table, is better and we're a year older," second-year CMU coach Mike Gawlik said. "We brought back some really talented players and we added some really talented freshmen. When everybody's a year more experienced and a year more mature, it typically results in some good things. I don't know that there's a magic potion that we drank, I just think that we're paying attention to the little things and buying in more to the fact that little things impact the big picture."
SCOUTING REPORT
• Laura Gross leads Indiana State with 83 kills. Cassie Kawa is second with 50 while hitting at a .398 percentage.
• IUPUI bounced back from a two-set deficit to top Ball State on Tuesday.
• Alexis Middlebrooks had recorded 91 kills to lead Cleveland State.
NEXT
• The Chippewas will return to the road next weekend for the Shamrock Invitational at Notre Dame, where they will play the host Fighting Irish, Michigan State and Southern Illinois.
• CMU follows that by hosting Toledo (Sept. 21) and Ball State (Sept. 23) on their MAC-opening weekend.
