Three-goal Appalachian State surge does in CMU
OXFORD, Ohio – Appalachian State scored three goals in an 8-minute, 12-second span early in the second half on Wednesday in handing Central Michigan a 5-2 loss in a first-round Mid-American Conference Tournament game at the Miami Field Hockey Field.
The loss ended CMU's season at 2-16. The Mountaineers (6-13) advance to take on Longwood on Thursday.
"There were a lot of baby steps that were taken," coach Catherine Ostoich said in assessing her first season in charge of the Chippewa program. "Over the next few weeks I plan to digest the season and see how many milestones we knocked off.
"But overall, the season was good. We definitely made some progress, but we know we still have a lot of work to do to where we want to be."
HOW IT HAPPENED
Imogen West and Callie Quinn scored for the Chippewas. Quinn's goal came at the 28:35 mark and tied the game, 2-2.
The Mountaineers broke the tie on a Fredi Stegen goal at the 44:30 mark. Appalachian State went up 4-2 on a goal by Veerle Van Heertum at 51:20, and then Ali Williams scored just over a minute later.
"We played them well," Ostoich said. "We broke their press defense for most of the game. But then, in the second half, we got a little too comfortable and we had a massive breakdown. So, that was a tough pill to swallow after putting together some really good plays. But, we were still in it, we just couldn't generate anything on offense."
GOOD START
Taryn Damm and Georgina Minta assisted on CMU's goals. West's goal came less than eight minutes into the game, giving the Chippewas a shot of momentum and confidence.
"It was awesome, we've been defending for the first five to six minutes of the game and the first time down the field, we take a shot and score a goal," Ostoich said. "West ripped a great shot and all of a sudden, we were up, and everyone could breathe a little bit better."
SENIOR SWAN SONG
Goalkeeper Lily Amadio, one of five Chippewas playing in her final collegiate game, made nine saves. Many of the key Chippewas, including leading scorer Samantha Glapinski, is scheduled to return next season.
