MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Bowling Green scored twice in the first 32-plus minutes on Thursday, handing Central Michigan a 3-1 loss in a Mid-American Conference game at the CMU Soccer Stadium.
The Chippewas fell to 5-8, 3-2 MAC. Bowling Green improved to 7-3-2, 5-0, maintaining its grip on first place in the league.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams found opportunities early, and Erica Hubert broke through in the 25th minute with her team-leading seventh goal of the season, putting the Falcons on top.
The Falcons struck again less than eight minutes later when Sophia Barnes' shot snuck past CMU goalkeeper Morgan Britain, making it 2-0.
Hubert's second goal of the night, this one coming in the 54th minute, gave the Falcons a commanding 3-0 lead.
The Chippewas finally broke through in the 87th minute when senior Madison Costner scored off a Lexi Pelafas pass. It was Costner's fifth goal of the season.
IN GOAL
Britain faced 11 shots on goal, finishing with eight saves.
"I thought (Britain) did a very good job," CMU coach Peter McGahey said. "(Bowling Green) put her under a lot of pressure. I thought she rose to the occasion well."
McGahey said his team left the field frustrated, which could be turned into a positive.
"I think sometimes when a team is frustrated, and I believe we are a frustrated team with the way the game went tonight, I think that's where breakthroughs sometimes happen," he said. "Sometimes people re-double their efforts and refocus … and I'm looking forward to that on Sunday."
