MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Six Central Michigan players finished in double figures, as the Chippewas defeated Siena Heights, 103-75, Sunday in McGuirk Arena.
The Chippewas, now 5-1 overall and 3-0 at home, eclipsed the 100-point mark for the second time this season and 19th total time under head coach Keno Davis.
"For the majority of the game I thought we were really getting some things accomplished," said Davis. "We were able to work on some of our weaknesses and obviously be able to play to some of our strengths."
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Saints managed keep pace with CMU into the first media timeout, tied 10-10 at 16:21. However, the Chippewas then pulled away with a 20-9 run to open an 11-point advantage at the 9:47 mark.
Siena Heights pulled within three points with 7:41 left, but the Chippewas took control once again with another 20-9 outburst to build a 52-38 halftime lead. Junior Kevin McKay slashed and layed up his way to 18 first-half points.
CMU would dominate the second half, leading by no less than 14 points and by as many as 32 with 6:11 left to play. Thirteen different Chippewas saw action and CMU never trailed against the Saints.
Central Michigan forced 24 SHU turnovers, recording a season-high 17 steals. The Chippewas converted those turnovers into 32 points.
CMU held a 41-34 advantage on the boards. Junior forward Rob Montgomery collected a game-high eight rebounds while sophomore forward Romelo Burrell finished with six.
LEADERS
McKay led all players with 23 points. Seniors Shawn Roundtree Jr. and Larry Austin Jr. each added 17 points and combined for five steals and only three turnovers committed. Junior David DiLeo scored 14 points, knocking down a game-high three 3-pointers. Rob Montgomery added 11 points while Dallas Morgan scored 10 points off the bench.
TO THE LINE
The Chippewas attempted a season-high 47 free throws in Sunday's victory, making 35.
"We realize we didn't have a great free throw percentage in the Bahamas," Roundtree said. "I'm glad we got to the line as much as we did today; we had a chance to redeem ourselves."
