CMU's Thompson, Whitfield Earn Weekly MAC Honors

Chippewas sweep West offensive, defensive awards
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- Central Michigan volleyball players Savannah Thompson and Maddie Whitfield have received weekly awards from the Mid-American Conference.

Thompson was named the MAC West Offensive Player of the Week, while Whitfield was named the MAC West Defensive Player of the Week.
Â
Both played key roles in CMU's sweep of MAC West-leading Ball State and Toledo last weekend.
Â
Thompson, a freshman outside hitter from Thornton, Ill., collected 24 kills on a .377 hitting percentage as the Chippewas won both matches in straight sets. She had 12 kills on a .435 hitting percentage against Ball State, and then posted another dozen kills on a .333 hitting percentage against the Rockets.

It marked the first time in Thompson's CMU career that she has posted back-to-back matches with a .300 or better hitting percentage. She averaged four kills per set and also had a team-high 27 digs in the two matches.

Whitfield, a freshman middle blocker from saline, had eight blocks including seven block assists in the two victories. She averaged 1.33 blocks per set. She also had seven kills and three aces.

The wins over Ball State and Toledo gave CMU victories in four of its last five matches.

The Chippewas, who are 7-19 overall, 4-10 MAC, close the season next weekend with MAC games at Northern Illinois and at Western Michigan.

It marks the first time that CMU players have won a MAC weekly award this season.
