MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - A much better second half. The trick now is to get that kind of effort and production for all 60 minutes.
Michigan seized a 7-0 halftime lead on Sunday and went on to post a 12-4 victory over Central Michigan in a nonconference women's lacrosse game at the CMU Lacrosse Complex.
The Chippewas slipped to 2-4. They entertain Duquense in a nonleaguer on Thursday (4 p.m.). Michigan is 3-5.
THE SCORING
Molly Garrett and Lilly Grass scored three goals apiece to lead the Wolverines. Anna Schoonover, Natalie Karlen, Emma Hamilton and Jessica Schuchardt scored for CMU. Schuchardt and Shannon Doyle each had an assist.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Chippewas turned in a much-better effort in the second half, scoring the first two goals after halftime and pulling to 9-3 at one point and, later, to 10-4.
IN GOAL
CMU goalkeeper Dominique Hamman (0-3) played all 60 minutes and made 14 saves.
"Our goalkeeping by Dom Hamman was outstanding," CMU coach Sara Tisdale said. "It's the best she's played all season. She's been working hard."
COACH Sara Tisdale:
"I'll take the second half, but I wish we would have come out that way in the first half because I think it would have caught Michigan a little bit off guard, got them on their heels a little bit, and momentum would have gone a little bit differently."
"Playing Big Ten opponents is important because of the strength it adds to our schedule and also the amount of experience our players gain good, bad or otherwise."
"Our defense has been lock-down. What we need to do now is turn that around and allow our offense to have more opportunities. We like where our defense is, I think Dom Hamman is playing really well, and now it's a matter of turning it into points on the scoreboard."
