MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Nothing like a 12-0 scoring run to make up for a slow start.
Natalie Karlen scored first with under eight minutes to go in the first half, sparking 12 unanswered goals and sealing a 15-8 nonconference win for the Central Michigan lacrosse team on Thursday against Duquesne at the CMU Lacrosse Complex. The win lifted CMU to 3-4 and snapped a two-game losing streak.
The Chippewas are scheduled for another nonleaguer on Saturday (noon) as they play host to Saint Francis (4-3).
HOW IT HAPPENED
Central Michigan found itself down 7-1 halfway through the first half. An offensive outburst by the Chippewas made it a tie game going into halftime and the scoring momentum didn't ease for the Chippewas for the rest of the game.
LEADERS
Emma Hamilton collected five goals, three of which were in the first half, to lead CMU. The sophomore has 14 goals and 17 points, both team highs, on the season.
Jocelyn Lemay and Anna Schoonover also each recorded hat tricks for the Chippewas.
Jill Vacanti had a team-high three goals for the Dukes.
THE GOALKEEPING
Dominique Hamman (1-3) went the distance in goal for the Chippewas, making six saves.
COACH Sara Tisdale:
"As we continue to talk about, it takes us a little bit to get warmed up but what you saw today was some offensive chemistry that we've been lacking all season, so that was great for them to get into a good rhythm. I'm super proud of the defense for making adjustments they made. We stuck with our game plan."
"We brought our big shovels today. Hopefully we can take this momentum and ride it into the next game. I'm proud of them for not giving up and not thinking this was over. It was a full team effort and they did a really nice job."
