MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Dominique Hamman recorded a program-record 17 saves on Wednesday as the Central Michigan lacrosse team won its inaugural Southern Conference game, 15-13, at the CMU Lacrosse Stadium.
The Chippewas (5-4) are riding a three-game win streak and are scheduled to play host to Kennesaw State in a nonconference matchup on Saturday (1 p.m.). The Owls are 2-7.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Down 3-2 less than eight minutes into the game, the Chippewas went on a five-goal barrage leading to a 10-7 halftime lead. CMU kept the Bears at arm's length throughout the final 30 minutes.
THE LEADERS
Jocelyne Lemay and Anna Schoonover scored four goals apiece to lead CMU. Natalie Karlen added three goals, and Emma Hamilton racked up six assists to lead the Chippewas.
Kate Leone led Mercer with five goals.
THE GOALKEEPING
Hamman broke her own program saves record of 15, which she set in a game at Robert Morris on Feb. 18, 2017. Twelve of Hamman's saves came in the second half as she improved to 3-3.
Iseabal Cryne picked up the loss in goal for Mercer. She made three saves in just under 20 minutes.
CMU COACH SARA TISDALE:
"It's the first time our program has defeated Mercer, and that's huge. It gives us a ton of momentum going into the rest of conference play - having that as our first game and our first win is huge. They're a good opponent and never stopped fighting, so I was proud of our defense especially that they stepped up at the end of the game."
"Every game's important, it doesn't matter if its league or non-league. We like our three-game win streak and we intend to keep that rolling. I don't care if they're SoCon, ASUN, or whatever."
