MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Larry Austin Jr., a graduate transfer, is set to join coach Keno Davis' Central Michigan men's basketball program.
Austin, a 6-foot-2 guard, played in 2017-18 at Vanderbilt and was at Xavier for the previous two seasons. He will be immediately eligible.
"We are very excited to announce that Larry Austin Jr. will be joining our team for the 2018-19 season," Davis said. "The combination of talent and experience that he possesses will help him make an immediate impact on both ends of the court."
A native of Springfield, Ill., Austin averaged 22.2 points and 7.5 rebounds in leading Lanphier High School to a 27-2 finish in 2013-14. Among those 27 wins was a victory over nationally ranked Christian Brother College, which went on to win a Missouri state championship.
Lanphier is also the alma mater of CMU assistant coach Kevin Gamble.
Austin was named the Central State Eight Conference Player of the Year during his senior season when he averaged 4.2 steals and 4.0 assists while shooting 38 percent from behind the 3-point line and 73 percent from the free throw line. He was named an Illinois Class 3A first team all-stater by the Associated Press, by the Chicago Tribune and by the Chicago Sun-Times.
Austin was rated a three-star prospect by ESPN.com, Scout.com and Rivals.com coming out of high school, and was the No. 108 overall prospect – and 22nd point guard – by 247sports.com. He was listed as the No. 24 point guard in the nation by ESPN and as the No. 29 point guard by Scout.com.
Austin received an invitational to the prestigious NBPa Top 100 Camp and was a member of the USA U16 National Team, which he helped win the FIBA Americas Championship gold medal.
