
Chippewas Drop Series Opener at Northern Illinois

DEKALB, Ill. - Northern Illinois got a run-scoring single and then a sacrifice fly to score two runs in the fifth inning to go ahead for good on Friday as the Huskies topped Central Michigan, 4-1, in the opener of a three-game Mid-American Conference softball series at the Huskies' Mary M. Bell Field.
CMU fell to 21-23, 11-10 MAC while NIU is 20-29, 10-10 MAC. The three game series will conclude with a doubleheader on Saturday (2 p.m.).
HOW IT HAPPENED
Andrea Perlberg scored on Tolfree's double in the second inning to tie the game, 1-1. Northern Illinois took the lead with two runs in the fifth inning.
AT THE PLATE
Lacy Tolfree recorded a team-high three hits, including an RBI double to lead CMU at the plate.
Erika Underwood had two hits while Shaidan Knapp, Maison Kalina and Perlberg added once each for Central Michigan.
Jenny Van Geerty, Dominique Greeno and Kira Mickelson each had two hits for NIU.
IN THE CIRCLE
Losing pitcher Hanna Warren (8-8) allowed three runs on six hits and tallied four strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings. Taylor Weaver pitched in relief, striking out two.
Winning pitcher Alex Warren (9-6) allowed eight hits over 6 1/3 innings.
