Chippewa Great Kaman To Enter Grand Rapids Hall

GRAND RAPIDS – Former Central Michigan standout Chris Kaman will be inducted into the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame.
The hall announced its 2018 class of inductees on Friday. The date of the induction ceremony will be announced later.
Kaman, who prepped at Tri-Unity Christian High School in Wyoming, is one of Central Michigan’s all-time greats, earning the Mid-American Conference Player of the Year and All-America honors in 2003, when he led the Chippewas to the MAC regular-season and tournament championships, and an NCAA Tournament berth.
He was named the MAC Tournament MVP that year and the 11th-seeded Chippewas upset sixth-seeded Creighton, 79-73, in a first-round NCAA Tourney game.
Kaman, who was also named the MAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2003, was the No. 6 pick, by the Los Angeles Clippers, in the 2003 NBA Draft and went on to a 13-year NBA career with the Clippers, the Hornets, the Mavericks, the Lakers and the Portland Trail Blazers.
He was an NBA All-Star in 2010. He retired after the 2015-16 season. He played in 735 NBA games, averaging 11.2 points and 7.6 rebounds per game.
Kaman holds or shares several CMU records including blocks in a game (8), blocks in a season (98), rebounds in a season (373), free throw attempts in a season (275), and single-season field goal percentage (.608). His 694 points in 2002-03, his final season as a Chippewa, ranks third in program history.
