IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa scored three unanswered goals on Friday in handing the Central Michigan soccer team a 3-1 nonconference loss at the Iowa Soccer Complex.
The Chippewas slipped to 1-3. They play Northern Iowa (1-1-2) on Sunday (noon) in Iowa City. The Panthers fell, 2-0, on Friday to Virginia Commonwealth. Iowa is 3-0-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Chippewas seized a 1-0 lead on Sheila Magnon's goal in the 10th minute. The Hawkeyes got the equalizer in the 33rd minute, and then scored two goals in a six-plus minute span early in the second half.
"You can't give away three set-piece goals to a Big Ten team, or any team at this level, and expect to win," CMU coach Peter McGahey said. "We executed our game plan and we created enough chances to score more goals. The reality is that giving up three goals, you've built a mountain for yourself that's almost impossible to overcome.
"They're a difficult team to break down, they're well organized, they're well coached. Unfortunately, three moments in the game … we've got to find ways to get those fixed."
MAGNAN'S GOAL
Magnan, a sophomore, scored her first goal of the season and the second of her career. It came in the 10th minute and it came, unassisted, off a cross that was deflected by a defender.
DEFENSE
CMU sophomore goalkeeper Morgan Britain made five saves.
THE NUMBERS
The Chippewas finished with five corner kicks to Iowa's two. Iowa finished with a 13-8 edge in shots.
McGAHEY
"We were resilient, we competed all the way until the end and we showed great commitment to each other. That's what we're going to draw on. I think there are positives that we'll build on. We're going to get better and be better tomorrow."
