YORKTOWN, Ind. – Jami Laude and Bria Colosky both shot 11-over 155 on Monday to lead the Central Michigan golf team on the opening day of the Ball State Cardinal Classic at The Players Club.
Â
The third and final round of the 54-hole event is scheduled for Tuesday. It is the Chippewas' first event of the season, and the first as CMU's coach for Jim Earle.
Â
"We played a lot better than what our scores were," Earle said. "We found some big trouble on a few holes and I think that's what held us back from shooting some really low scores."
Â
Laude and Colosky are among a group tied for 33rd in the 87-player field. Laude, a sophomore, opened with a 3-over 75, the lowest round of the day among the Chippewas. She posted an 8-over 80 in the second round. Colosky, a senior, shot 79-76.
Â
The Chippewas posted a 315 team total in Monday's morning round and carded a 317 in the afternoon. CMU stands in 13th place, nine shots behind 12th-place Illinois State in the 16-team field.
Â
Also for the Chippewas, Danielle Sawyer shot 80-81 – 161, Holly Hines shot 81-82 –163, and Meghan Deardorff opened with an 85 and closed with an 80 for a 165 total.
Â
Earle said none of his players was immune from the occasional big number. Laude's 75 and Colosky's 76 were CMU's lowest rounds of the day, and both of their respective rounds included a triple bogey.
Â
"Mondays in a college golf tournament is a really long day of golf," Earle said. "We get rid of those big holes we're going to get down to the scores that are up near the leaders. It's a learning process, it's the first event of the season and I have no qualms about any of that.
Â
"I thought they did a good job of staying positive and they battled back. We hit a lot of great shots out there and that was the most encouraging thing for sure. All in all I was pleased and I was impressed."
Â
Defending champion Indianapolis shot 292-282 for a 2-under 574 total and leads the tournament by 20 shots over second-place Ball State (594). Bradley (601) is third. Indianapolis is the defending NCAA Division II national champion and is ranked No. 1.
Â
Indianapolis' Cailyn Henderson opened with an even-par 72 and then fired a 5-under 67 in the afternoon round. She leads the tournament with a 139 total. Teammate Kenndy Holtsclaw is in second, four shots back.
