Chippewas Bounce Back, Top Akron In MAC Game

CMU emerges from weekend tied for second in league, plays at first-place Bowling Green on Thursday

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Madison Costner scored less than four minutes into the second half on Sunday, as the Central Michigan soccer team posted a 1-0 Mid-American Conference win over Akron.
It was Costner's fourth goal of the season as CMU bounced back from a 2-0 loss at Buffalo on Friday. The Chippewas improved to 5-7-0, 3-1-0 MAC; Akron is 4-7-1, 1-3.
"Really proud of the team," CMU coach Peter McGahey said. "Their response from Friday night was really tremendous. I thought they showed a real 'we' mentality. Lots of gutsy effort and playing for each other."
HOW IT HAPPENED
Costner scored in the 48th minute on a pass from Amanda Britain.
The Chippewas fended off 10 Akron corner opportunities and seven shots on goal. Morgan Britain saved five herself and the team helped her out with two in posting the shutout.
"I though the guts and resilience that the team had fending off 10 corner kicks today was the defining thing that we can carry forward," McGahey said. "I thought that defending the corner kicks and set pieces that they got, and we did a really good job of clearing the ball and defending the shots."
WHERE THEY STAND
The Chippewas emerge from the second weekend of MAC play tied for second in the standings with Western Michigan. Bowling Green tops the league at 4-0. CMU plays at Bowling Green on Thursday, Oct. 4.
COSTNER
With four goals on the season, Costner ranks second on the team in both goals and points (11).
The senior ranked second on the team in goals (6) and points (13) last season. In 2016, Costner was second on the with four goals and on just 19 shots.
"She responded with a really positive performance today," McGahey said. "It was a really clinical, very good goal today."
BY THE NUMBERS
Akron defeated the Chippewas in most categories except the most important one.
The Zips held a 14-7 advantage in shots, a 7-2 edge in shots on goal, and had 10 corners to the Chippeawas' five.

Central Michigan returns to Mount Pleasant to entertain Bowling Green on Thursday, Oct. 4 (7 p.m.) and then travels to Toledo on Sunday, Oct. 7 (1 p.m.). Both are MAC matches.
