Chippewas get their first taste of MAC competition
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- The Central Michigan track and field team will compete on Saturday in the Can-Am Classic, hosted by Eastern Michigan at the Eagles' Bowen Field House.
Â
The meet is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. with the field events; running events are slated to start at 1 p.m.
Â
THE FIELD
This meet includes the Eagles and Chippewas along with Detroit Mercy, Oakland, Michigan, Grand Valley State, Bowling Green State and Buffalo from the American side, and, from Canada, Windsor, Western Ontario, Waterloo, York and McGill.
Â
REGIONAL RANK
CMU is among the schools ranked in the season's first Great Lakes Regional rankings.
The Chippewa men are ranked 11th, ahead of, among others, Michigan State, Oakland and Marquette. The CMU women are ranked fourth in the region, ahead of the likes of Wisconsin, Michigan, Michigan State and Eastern Michigan.
Â
TRAINING PARTNERS
CMU Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Jenny Swieton said that her program's solid start and its regional rankings have not happened by accident.
Â
"I think the team is on the same page, and they all want to get better," she said. "So they're doing a good job at holding each other accountable, pushing each other, and encouraging each other to do better. The student-athletes are happy for one another when someone has a big performance."
Â
FIRST MAC OPPONENTS
The Chippewas have faced some good competition over the first three meets of the indoor season. Saturday's event at EMU will mark the first time they will square off with some of their MAC brethren.
Â
The MAC Indoor Championships are scheduled for Feb. 22-23 at Kent State.
Â
"I think every team in the MAC has an area that they're really good at," Swieton said. "The MAC is a very competitive conference."
Â
NEXT
The Chippewas will return to South Bend, Ind. to compete in the Notre Dame Meyo Invitational on Feb. 1-2. CMU competed a week ago in the Notre Dame Invitational.
