CMU looks to break over .500 in duals
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan wrestling team put its continual improvement on display last weekend with a relatively good 11th-place finish, all things considered, at the prestigious Ken Kraft Midlands Championships.
Next for CMU is a return to Mid-American Conference competition when Old Dominion visits McGuirk Arena on Friday (7 p.m.).
The Chippewas are 2-2 overall in duals, 1-0 in the MAC. They defeated Northern Illinois, 18-15, in their league opener, at home, on Dec. 21.
KNOW THE FOE
Old Dominion is 1-2, 0-1. It dropped its lone MAC dual to sixth-ranked Missouri, 40-3. One of the Monarchs' two dual victories came over Northwestern, 30-11. The Wildcats were ranked 11th nationally at the time but have since fallen out of the top 25. Old Dominion also lost to No. 5 North Carolina State, 16-15.
RANKINGS
Old Dominion is ranked 26th nationally.
Individually, three Monarchs are ranked nationally by The Open Mat. They are Sa'Derian Perry, who is 13th at 141 pounds; Larry Early, third at 157; and Seldon Wright, 20th at 174. Perry, a junior, transferred to ODU from Eastern Michigan, where he was an All-American last season.
Just one Chippewa, sophomore Matt Stencel, is ranked nationally (16th at 285).
Stencel along with Jordan Atienza, Logan Parks and Drew Hildebrandt represent CMU in the individual MAC rankings. Stencel and Atienza (184) are both ranked second, while Parks (157) and Hildebrandt (125) are both ranked fourth.
The Monarchs have six wrestlers ranked in the MAC: Early is first, Perry and Michael McGee (125) are second, Kenan Carter (149) and Antonio Agee (184) are third, and Wright is fourth.
In the MAC team rankings, which were released on Dec. 13, Old Dominion is third and the Chippewas are tied for fifth with Kent State and SIUE.
CHIPPEWA NOTES
• CMU has won three consecutive duals from the Monarchs and is 9-2 in the all-time series.
• Stencel (third) and Parks (seventh) were the lone Chippewas to place at the Midlands Championships.
• Old Dominion partook in the Midlands, but few, if any, of the Monarchs' starters were among them.

CMU is scheduled to go to Missouri for a MAC dual on Saturday, Jan. 19.
