MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan women's cross country team will run at the Joe Piane-Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind. on Friday (3:15 p.m.) after adding the race to their schedule.
Extra Run
The Chippewa women had three weeks of off time between their last two meets and faced another three weeks until their next scheduled meet, Oct. 18 at Bradley. In an attempt to keep her runners sharp, coach Jenny Swieton added the race at Notre Dame to the schedule.
"The women just need more experience racing," Swieton said. "Going three weeks for them was just a little too long, so they almost felt rusty when it came to racing and (they were) not necessarily in that race mentality."
Competing this week will get the Chippewas back to a more typical schedule, Swieton said.
"In the past we've competed every two weeks with races," she said. "This year the calendar is weird and the season is longer, so we were going to have two three-week breaks. If we add this meet then we'll be back on the two-week cycle."
Objectives
Above all this weekend, Swieton said she wants her runners to show a passion to win and to compete all out.
"I always say, 'run fast or die trying,'" she said. "I'd rather see them die trying and just kind of fall off and crash and burn then finish knowing they could have done more. It's really important that you test those limits to know what your limits are. If we're constantly holding back, we really just don't know what we're capable of."
