Gawlik named Coach of the Year; Rosario-Martinez, Smith named to first team
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Central Michigan volleyball coach Mike Gawlik and two of his players have been honored by the Mid-American Conference.
Gawlik was named the MAC Coach of the Year, while CMU's Lisbeth Rosario-Martinez and Kalina Smith each earned a spot on the 12-member All-MAC First Team.
Rosario-Martinez, a junior middle blocker from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, ranks second on the team with 249 kills, and is fourth in the MAC with a .352 hitting percentage and fifth in aces (33).
Smith, a junior outside hitter from Powell, Wyo., leads CMU with 346 kills and is second on the team with 307 digs. Her 3.43 kills per set is tied for third in the MAC. Smith was named the All-MAC Second Team last season.
Gawlik, who is in his fourth year at CMU, led the Chippewas to the second divisional championship in program history and its first since 2003. Gawlik is the second Chippewa coach to earn the league Coach of the Year Award after Erik Olson in 2008.
The Chippewas are 21-7 and finished 11-5 in MAC play. Their 21 wins is the program's most since 2007, when it posted 22 victories.
CMU is the No. 2 seed for the MAC Tournament and will play a semifinal match on Saturday, Nov. 23 (7 p.m.) at Bowling Green. If the Chippewas win, they will play for the tournament title on Sunday, Nov. 24.
