CMU will be a charter member
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Central Michigan will be a charter member in Mid-American Conference women's lacrosse.
League officials announced today that beginning in 2020-21, the MAC will sponsor the sport with five schools, including two affiliate members, involved in the first year.
The Chippewas will be joined by fulltime MAC members Kent State and Akron along with affiliate members Youngstown State and Detroit Mercy. Eastern Michigan is expected to add the sport in 2021-22, bringing to six the number of members.
"We are grateful for the MAC and Commissioner Dr. Jon Steinbrecher," CMU coach Sara Tisdale said. "They had this vision all along that this decision would come when the timing was right. We are grateful that this sport has grown so much in the Midwest that 2021 is the year for us to make that jump and join all of our other sports at CMU in the MAC.
"It makes it one brand, one CMU, and we are excited to be a part of that brand."
The Chippewas launched the program in 2016 and competed in the Atlantic Sun during its first two seasons. CMU joined the Southern Conference in 2018 and will compete in it for the third and final season on 2020.
"We are excited that lacrosse has officially been added as a Mid-American Conference-sponsored sport and we appreciate Commissioner Steinbrecher's leadership and vision throughout this process," said Zyzelewski Family Associate Vice President/Director of Athletics Michael Alford. "This move represents an opportunity for all Central Michigan sports to exist under the MAC umbrella and to expand the ability to showcase our program and the sport of lacrosse throughout the Midwest.
"We would like to thank the Atlantic Sun and Southern Conference for supporting CMU lacrosse in our efforts to establish and grow our program through its first five years of existence."
