Chippewa Wrestlers Square Off With Big Ten Foes

CMU closes the regular season on Sunday at home with Purdue
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan wrestling team will close the regular season this weekend with a pair of nonconference duals against Big Ten opponents.
The Chippewas (4-7) go to Michigan State on Friday (6 p.m.) and then entertain Purdue on Sunday (2 p.m.) at McGuirk Arena. The Spartans are 9-8 in duals, while Purdue is 7-9.
CMU is scheduled to partake in the Mid-American Conference Championships on March 8-9 at Old Dominion in Norfolk, Va.
SENIOR DAY
The Chippewas will honor their lone senior, 184-pounder Jordan Atienza, prior to Sunday's meet with the Boilermakers.
In addition, members of the 1998 and 2008 Chippewa squads will be introduced during intermission of the dual. The 1998 squad posted CMU's best national finish, fifth place, while the '08 team tied for seventh at the NCAA Championships.
RANKINGS
Central Michigan has two wrestlers who are ranked nationally by The Open Mat. Matt Stencel, who is 22-4 on the season, is seventh at 285 pounds; Drew Hildebrandt, 15-7, is 17th at 125. Both are sophomores.
Stencel has won 13 consecutive matches and is tied for the national lead with 16 pins.
In the final MAC rankings of the season, released today, Stencel is first, Hildebrandt is third, while Logan Parks (157), Collin Lieber (174) and Atienza are each ranked fourth.
Michigan State has two wrestlers who are ranked nationally by The Open Mat. Sophomore RayVon Foley, 29-2, is eighth at 125; and freshman Cameron Caffey, 26-4, is 19th at 184.
Foley's 29 victories are the most in the nation this season, and he leads the country with 12 major-decision victories this season.
The Boilermakers have five ranked wrestlers. Sophomore Devin Schroder, 17-8, is 18th at 125; senior Ben Thornton, 17-7, is 13th at 133; sophomore Griffin Parriott, 13-6, is 13th at 157; junior Dylan Lydy, 22-6, is 10th at 174; and junior Christian Brunner, 18-7, is 11th at 197.
