CMU rallies late to win opener
OXFORD, Ohio – The Central Michigan softball team once again did most of its offensive damage late.
In game one, it was enough; in the nightcap, not quite.
The Chippewas split a Mid-American Conference doubleheader with Miami (Ohio) on Saturday, winning the opener, 4-3; and then falling in the nightcap, 7-3.
The Chippewas are 11-15, 2-1 MAC and are scheduled to play 25th-ranked Michigan in their home opener at Margo Jonker Stadium on Tuesday, March 26 (4 p.m.). They then go to Buffalo next weekend for a three-game MAC series. Miami is 14-12, 1-2.
GAME 1
CMU scored two runs in the seventh inning and then pushed across the go-ahead run in the eighth in posting their 4-3 victory. In Friday's series opener, CMU got a three-run homer from Erika Underwood in the eighth inning in a 4-1 win.
In Saturday's opener, CMU used an error, a bunt single and a walk to load the bases, and then Andrea Perlberg's ground ball went for an error, allowing Stephanie Anderson to scamper home from third with the go-ahead run in the eighth inning.
Winner Kaitlyn Bean (3-3), the third Chippewa pitcher, set down the Huskies in order in the bottom of the inning to close it out.
CMU starter Samantha Howell allowed two runs on six hits over 5 1/3 innings. She struck out three and walked one. Cloe Mallory went 1 1/3 innings, surrendering one run on two hits while walking two.
Rachel Vieira had two hits to lead CMU's seven-hit attack.
GAME 2
Miami scored three runs in the third inning and added three more in the fourth in building a 6-0 lead.
The Chippewas scored all three of their runs in the seventh inning on Underwood's second three-run homer in as many days.
Perlberg finished with two of CMU's five hits.
Haley John (2-5) started for the Chippewas and took the loss. Howell, Shannon Stein and Bean pitched in relief.
