Softball Drops 2 In Florida

Chippewas return to the diamond on Wednesday to play South Florida
CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Central Michigan softball team dropped both of its games on it Spring Break trip on Tuesday, falling to South Dakota State, 6-1; and to Penn, 1-0.
The Chippewas (7-10) are scheduled to play South Florida (12-9) on Wednesday (4 p.m.) in Tampa at the USF Softball Stadium.
South Dakota State (11-4) bookended its scoring, getting two runs in the first inning and then four in the seventh in downing the Chippewas in the CMU's first game on Tuesday.
The Chippewas scored their lone run in the second inning on an Erika Underwood RBI single.
Underwood also doubled in the game, collecting two of CMU's six hits.
Sophomore Samantha Howell started in the circle for the Chippewas and took the loss. She allowed two runs on two hits and walked four over four innings. Shannon Stein and Haley John both pitched in relief for CMU.
Penn (3-4) took advantage of two hit batsmen, a bunt single, and a single in scratching out the game's lone run in the third inning.
The Chippewas finished with just two hits off Penn's Tabitha Dyer (2-0), who won a pitchers' dual with CMU freshman Kaitlyn Bean.
Bean (2-2) surrendered four hits and struck out six in going the distance.
Shaidan Knapp led off the sixth inning with a single to break up Dyer's no-hit bit. Morgan Gardner singled with one out in the seventh for CMU's other hit.
