First-year coach Jim McElwain puts his team through its paces at Family Fun Fest
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- Central Michigan football fans got their first look at their team under first-year coach Jim McElwain on Saturday during the Family Fun Fest at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.
Â
Despite a strong wind for the majority of the day, the sun was shining with very few clouds in the sky, making it a near perfect day for football.
Â
"We've had a really good spring, we have one more day, we're going to come back on Monday," said McElwain, who was named to head the program in December. "The progress here has been fantastic. I'm excited what these guys have invested in, but we still have a long way to go. We'll get back to fall camp, and get ready to play the season."
Â
PRACTICE
The practice started off as a normal practice would with the players meeting with their position groups and running drills, as well as throwing and catching from the quarterbacks and wide receivers.
Â
About 30 minutes in came the scrimmage, with the offense going against the defense.
Â
On display on the first series was senior transfer quarterback from Houston, Quinten Dormady. It didn't take long for Dormady to display his talent. One of his first passes of the scrimmage was to a streaking Jonathon Ward.
Â
Dormady and the rest of the quarterbacks, including last year's sometime starter Tommy Lazzaro and transfer David Moore, impressed.
Â
"Dormady is looking good, and so are the other guys," McElwain said. "It's fun to see him make progress as far as learning what we want to do, and it was good to see those guys move the team today."
Â
NEW ENERGY
Since coming to CMU, McElwain has brought in new energy along with discipline.
Â
"Oe day one when he came in, he just told us to come in and work hard," wide receiver JaCorey Sullivan said. "So we've been coming in (to practice), working hard, and listening to what he says, and what we need to do. In the long run, it'll all take care of itself."
Â
KIDS CLINIC
Before practice, the team hosted a kids clinic for all the young, aspiring athletes in the Mount Pleasant area. The high energy and fun atmosphere made it a memorable experience for both the young athletes in attendance, and the Chippewa players.
Â
"It was amazing, it was my fifth year doing it, so I've been seeing it since the time I got here, until now," senior linebacker Michael Oliver said. "It's amazing for us to give back to the kids."
