Chippewas roll past Howard, look to big Southern Conference weekend at home
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Central Michigan lacrosse team improved to 5-7 on Sunday with a 20-1 nonconference victory over Howard, posting its second-consecutive dominant victory featuring historic scoring numbers.
Â
The 19-goal margin of victory is the highest in Chippewa history, and it came just two days after the Chippewas set the previous record with an 18-goal margin of victory against Delaware State. CMU's 20 goals was a season, eclipsing the 19 it scored on Friday.
Â
The one goal allowed is the lowest in program history, marking the third time the Chippewas have accomplished that feat, and the second time they have done it in two games.
Â
Sunday's outburst marked the third time in the four-year history of the program that it has scored at least 20 goals in a game, and the 30 teams points – 20 goals, 10 assists – ties for the third most in a single game by a CMU squad.
Â
"Today was a very clean win," CMU Coach Sara Tisdale said. "Our one mental mistake that led to a goal was handling a foul situation, but we can learn from that. Our offense really came together today. Our staff challenged first-year attacker Courtney Burke to step up and be a vocal leader and she was very strong.
Â
"Again we saw a lot of first-year (players) get quality minutes and they really thrived today. We intentionally focus on one game at a time, one day at a time. We won't allow ourselves to get too far ahead because we forget the importance of the process."
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
CMU got off to a hot start, getting out to an 8-0 lead in the game's first 11 minutes. CMU had 11 players score goals, including freshman Elise Marshall, who scored the first of her career.
Â
CMU posted 31 shots, tied for ninth in program history, and 27 of them were on goal, which ties for the sixth most in program history. The Chippewas limited Howard (0-8) to three shots.
Â
LEADERS
Anna Schoonover led the Chippewas with four goals, Jessica Schuchardt had a hat trick, and Natalie Karlen, Tyra Prince and Jocelyne Lemay added two goals apiece. Prince also contributed four assists.
Â
All three goalies saw playing time for CMU. Senior Clare Laughery had the Chippewas' lone save in her first start of the season, and second in her career.
Â
"Clare is our MVP teammate," Tisdale said. "She comes to practice every day having watched the most film, being the most prepared, and is constantly sharing her time and knowledge. Clare earned the start today for so many reasons."
Â
NEXT
CMU has two important Southern Conference games at home next weekend. The first is on Friday, April 12 against Wofford (6 p.m.), and the second is scheduled for Sunday, April 14 against Furman (11 a.m.).
