Williams Advances To NCAA Championships

Chippewa long jumper will have a chance to double All-America honors
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Central Michigan's Nadia Williams is headed to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Williams, a junior from Mount Horeb, Wis., finished 12th on Thursday in the women's long jump at the NCAA East Preliminary at the University of North Florida. The top 12 finishers in each event advance to the championships, which are scheduled for June 5-8 at the University of Texas.
Williams' best leap on Thursday measured 19 feet, 10 ¼ inches, one-half inch better than the 13th-place finisher. Williams earned All-America honors in the long jump in March at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Also on Thursday, CMU junior Gabriella Beauvais advanced to the quarterfinals in the women's 400-meter dash when she finished fifth in her heat, completing the race in 53.27 seconds. Her time was the 21st best among the 48 runners entered in the event.
The quarterfinal is scheduled for Friday at 5:30 p.m.
Eight other Chippewas competed on Friday, but none advanced.
CMU freshman Jackson Blanchard finished eighth in 51.58 seconds in his heat in the men's 400-meter hurdles; sophomore Jack Dodge placed seventh in his heat in 47.27 in the men's 400-meter dash; junior Logan Targgart finished 20th in the hammer throw, measuring at 204 feet, 2 inches; sophomore Megan McElroy placed 16th in the women's javelin at 158-11; sophomores Marissa Dunn and Quiara Wheeler finished 41st and 44th, respectively, in the women's hammer throw. Dunn's top throw measured 178-7, while Wheeler's was 176-1; senior Megan O'Neil placed 42nd in the women's 10,000, finishing in 36:48.03; senior Janelle Perry placed 32nd in the women's long jump at 19-3 ½.
Perry is scheduled to compete on Friday in the women's 100-meter hurdles. Other Chippewas slated to compete on Friday: Erin Howard, women's discus; Siobhan Szerencsits, women's pole vault. On Saturday, Howard is slated to compete in the women's shot put, along with Shane Moffo (men's 110 hurdles), O'Neil (women's 5,000) and Kevin Weiler (men's shot put).
