Wisconsin Simply Too Much For Chippewas

CMU looks to bounce back next week in MAC opener at home
"It was a heck of a football team we played," the first-year coach said. "Obviously disappointed in, not our effort, but in how we played. I thought we'd play better, we didn't. It is what it is. Now we've got to pick ourselves back up."
Wisconsin, ranked 16th nationally in the Coaches Poll and 17th by the Associated Press, scored touchdowns on six of its seven first-half possessions and added a safety in building a 44-0 lead at the break.
That made the second half a time for the Chippewas (1-1) to play backups and begin looking ahead to next week, when they entertain Akron in the Mid-American Conference opener.
There is no need for long-range philosophic soul searching in the CMU camp. Wisconsin, behind running back Jonathan Taylor, a legitimate Heisman Trophy candidate, is just that good and is likely to remain a top-20 team throughout the season.
"I've said from the start I really like this football team, I like our guys, a bunch of good kids," McElwain said. "They're hurting in there right now, disappointed. We'll pick them back up and we'll move forward and get ready to play a conference opponent next week at home."
Taylor ran for 102 yards and three touchdowns and Wisconsin quarterback Jack Coan threw for 363 yards and three scores. Wisconsin (2-0) finished with 599 yards in total offense and held CMU to 58.
"It's a great learning experience for our guys," McElwain said. "A great atmosphere for our guys to be in, and I know they're disappointed in how they performed. You know what, that's OK. Sometimes you've got to put yourself out there and you learn a lot from failure. We're going to do that and come back and be a better team next week."
Subbing In
Quinten Dormady, a graduate transfer from Houston, made his second start at quarterback for the Chippewas.
He completed five of his 12 pass attempts for 36 yards and left the game after one quarter, giving way to backup David Moore, a junior transfer from Garden City (Kan.) Community College.
Dormady, McElwain said, "tweaked his knee" on a sack and threw an interception on the Chippewas' following series. At that point, the Chippewas trailed 16-0.
"Obviously (Dormady) threw off balance on that interception," McElwain said. "We had what we wanted if he was able to put his foot in the ground and drive the ball. There was no reason to keep him in there."
Moore played the second and third quarters and third-stringer Tommy Lazzaro, who started six games a year ago, took snaps in the fourth quarter.
The Chippewas played most every player who made the trip and dressed for the game, and six running backs carried the ball.
"We've got a long season ahead," McElwain said. "We certainly didn't throw the towel in; the guys who went in deserved it; they practice hard. We've got guys who deserve to play and we're going to play them. That's just the way it's going to be."
Defense
Linebackers Chuck Jones and Troy Brown led the Chippewa defense with 11 tackles and 10, respectively. It marked the career high for both players. Jones was credited with eight solo stops, Brown with seven.
Chippewa safety Da'Quaun Jamison recorded a sack, the first of his career.
A First And A Second
Adam Jones, a freshman walk-on receiver from Knoxville, Tenn., made his first catch as a Chippewa for an 8-yard gain. Jones is the son of former Chippewa coach Butch Jones.
Junior fullback Oakley Lavallii made his second career reception, for 6 yards. It was his first reception since he hauled in an 18-yard reception in the 2017 season opener against Rhode Island.
Last Shutout
The Chippewas were shut out for the first time since Oct. 19, 2002, when they lost, 49-0, at Northern Illinois. CMU had gone 208 consecutive games without being blanked.
Next
Akron fell to Alabama-Birmingham, 31-20, on Saturday to slip to 0-2.
The Zips defeated CMU, 17-10, in Akron last season. Before that, CMU had won seven consecutive games and 10 of 11 against the Zips. CMU leads the series, 16-10-1.
"It's a game that I know our guys will be ready to play," McElwain said. "We're excited to play at home, excited for that atmosphere. We need to fill that stadium up for these kids. Make it a tough place to play."
