MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Central Michigan's Lew Nichols III was named to the weekly "Fresh Four" by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) for his performance in a 31-23 victory over Eastern Michigan on Friday.
Nichols, a redshirt freshman from Detroit, had 29 carries for 196 yards and two touchdowns – all career highs – in CMU's dramatic come-from-behind victory. He averaged 6.8 yards per carry.
The Chippewas overcame a 20-6 deficit with 25 fourth-quarter points in improving to 3-1 overall and in the Mid-American Conference. Nichols rushed for 66 yards and both of his TDs in the final stanza.
Nichols more than doubled his season totals in attempts, yards and TDs with his standout performance. He has 337 yards and three TDs and is averaging 6.0 yards per carry.
Each week, the FWAA names four freshmen who turned in standout performances for their respective teams in the previous weekend's games. Also named this week were quarterbacks Will Rogers (Mississippi State) and Cornelious Brown IV (Georgia State) and running back Kyren Williams (Notre Dame).
Nichols and the Chippewas are scheduled to play host to Ball State on Saturday, Dec. 5 (5:30 p.m./ESPNU) at Kelly/Shorts Stadium. The Chippewas and Cardinals are tied for second place in the MAC West.
