CMU resumes MAC play at Eastern Michigan
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The break is over for the Central Michigan men's basketball team.
The Chippewas are scheduled to return to the court on Tuesday (7 p.m.) when they go to Eastern Michigan for a Mid-American Conference game.
The Chippewas are 4-4, 0-1 MAC. They have won four of their last five games, capped by a 127-66 nonconference home victory over Olivet on Dec. 20.
The lone loss in that stretch was a 76-61 league setback at Western Michigan on Dec. 18.
It's exclusively MAC games through the end of the regular season for the Chippewas, who are slated to play at Akron on Friday, Jan. 1. Their home game with Miami (Ohio), scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 2, has been postponed. A makeup date is pending.
Big Numbers
The 127 points the Chippewas posted in their win over Olivet ties for the second most in program history. They set the record (134) last season in a win over Mississippi Valley State. CMU has scored at least 100 points 22 times in coach Keno Davis' nine-year tenure in charge of the program.
After losing their first three games of the season, the Chippewas have averaged 90.4 points per game in their last five. On the season, CMU is third in the MAC at 82.9 points per.
Against Olivet, the Chippewas made 13 3-pointers, far and away their season best. CMU is shooting 36 percent from long range and holding its opponents to 32.5 percent.
Leaders
Senior Travon Broadway Jr. has emerged as the Chippewas' leading scorer and one of their top rebounders. He is averaging 15.5 points and ranks second on the team in rebounds (5.8). He has scored in double figures in seven of the Chippewas' eight games.
Junior Meikkel Murray, in his first season at CMU after transferring from Coffeyville (Kan.) CC, ranks second on the team in scoring (11.4) and leads the Chippewas with 6.6 rebounds per game. He has recorded at least eight rebounds in his last five games.
Guard Devontae Lane is the third Chippewa to average in double figures in scoring at 10.5. He scored a career-high 27 points in the win over Olivet.
Among the Best
Chippewa junior Caleb Huffman, a junior who transferred to CMU from Iowa Western CC, ranks fourth in the MAC with a .625 field goal shooting percentage. He has made 40 of his 64 attempts, including a 9-for-20 clip (45 percent) from 3-point range.
Huffman made 12 of his 16 field goal attempts en route to a career-high 30 points in the win over Olivet.
Scouting
The Eagles defeated Olivet, 94-65, on Sunday. Their other victory came over Adrian, 95-35. Both Olivet and Adrian are in-state Division III schools and members of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
Eastern dropped its MAC opener at home to Toledo, 91-74; and fell to Michigan State, 83-67, in East Lansing. The Spartans were ranked 13th nationally at the time.
The Eagles rank fourth in the MAC in both scoring (82.5) and scoring defense (68.5).
Rob Murphy is in his 10th season as Eastern's coach and the Eagles always present problems for opponents with their stingy zone defense.
