Chippewa junior among 31 across the nation on exclusive Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup list
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Central Michigan's Alexandria Robinson has been named a semifinalist for one of the most-prestigious awards in sports, the Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup.
Robinson, a junior multi-eventer from Novi, is one of just 31 student-athletes from all levels of NCAA, NAIA and junior/community college athletics named to the semifinalist list.
The award, which is made by Athletes for a Better World in conjunction with the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association, goes to those who have succeeded and excelled as role models and have made contributions to sports and their community.
At CMU, Robinson is an inclusion assistant for Residence Life and she serves on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. She has coached middle-school track for the past four years and last summer completed an internship with the National Community Reinvestment Coalition in Washington, D.C. Last fall, she received the MAC Diversity & Inclusion Student-Athlete Award.
"Lexi makes it a point to be involved in organizations all across campus," CMU director of track & field/cross country Jenny Swieton said. "She is very passionate about non-profit organizations and learned a lot during her internship last summer. She has never been the type of person to sit back and let things come to her; she is the kind of person to make things happen."
Robinson, a public administration major who carries a 3.78 grade point average, placed third in the pentathlon in helping the CMU women win the 2019 MAC Indoor Track & Field Championships. She is a two-time Academic All-MAC honoree.
2020 marks the 16th year that the Cup has been awarded. It is named in honor of the late John Wooden, the legendary coach who led UCLA to 10 NCAA men's basketball championships from 1964-75 and who embodied the characteristics of strong citizenship along with athletic excellence and achievement during his distinguished career.
The Cup is presented annually to four athletes – one professional, one collegiate, and two high school – who have made a major impact in the lives of others.
