Deardorff Leads Chippewas In Round 1 In Arizona

RIO VERDE, Ariz. – The Central Michigan golf team found the going rough on Friday during the first round of the Rio Verde Invitational on the White Wing course at Rio Verde Country Club.
The Chippewas posted a 327 team score on Friday and stand in 18th place of the 18-team event. Round 2 is scheduled for Saturday at 10:30 a.m. (EST) and the third and final round of the 54-hole stroke play event is scheduled for Sunday at 10:30 a.m. (EST).
Junior Meghan Deardorff shot a 6-over 78 to lead the Chippewas. She is tied for 39th place in the 94-player field.
Also for CMU on Friday, Claudia Salvador shot 80, Padgett Chitty posted an 83, and Zoe Vartyan carded an 86. Chippewa junior Jami Laude withdrew because of an injury.
"Our team made too many freshman mistakes," CMU coach Jim Earle said. "Hopefully these tough lessons pay off and we start to compete up to our competition."
The Chippewas trail 17th-place Ohio (321) by six shots and are nine back of Bowling Green, which shot 318.
Defending-champion Xavier posted a 297 team score and leads the tournament by two shots over Arkansas State (299). Northern Illinois (302) is third.
Grayson Gladden of Arkansas State and Elizabeth Win of Seton Hall both shot 1-under 71 for a one-shot lead in the individual standings.
