MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – The Central Michigan softball team closed the 2020 season by splitting two games on Thursday during its spring break trip to Florida.
CMU fell to Creighton, 2-1, in its first game, and then rebounded to top Merrimack College, 4-0, in its second game, which turned out to be CMU's last of the season. The Chippewas finished 6-13.
Freshman Caitlyn Britton (0-1) went the distance against Creighton in taking the loss in her first collegiate start. She allowed four hits and struck out three.
Tala Dean gave CMU a 1-0 lead with a first-inning RBI double. Creighton tied the game with a run in the fifth and then scored the go-ahead run, unearned, in the sixth.
Shaidan Knapp doubled for one of the Chippewas' four hits.
Creighton pitcher Mikayla Santa Cruz (7-4) struck out eight and allowed four hits in earning the win.
Junior Cloe Mallory threw her second-consecutive complete game victory in the Chippewas' 4-0 win over Merrimack.
Abby Niehaus and Shannon Stein each had an RBI single to lead the Chippewas at the plate.
The win over Merrimack turned out to be the final college games for two Chippewa seniors, Morgan Gardner and Bella Robles.
"After our first game we learned that game two would be the final for the season," first-year CMU coach McCall Salmon said. "Given the circumstances, I could not have been more proud of how our team reacted and responded.
"They left it all on the field and gave our seniors the opportunity to say they won their final collegiate softball game. Thank you to Morgan and to Bella for their commitment to this team and to this program."
