MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Central Michigan volleyball coach Mike Gawlik has announced the signing of Alyssa Griner, who will join the Chippewas for the 2020 season.
Griner is a 5-foot-10 outside hitter/defensive specialist and a 2020 graduate of Temperance Bedford High School, where she was a two-time First Team All-Southeastern Conference selection, a two-time Michigan Interscholastic Volleyball Coaches Association Division I All-Region pick, a Third Team All-Stater during her senior year, and was three times named to the Monroe News All-Region Team.
She finished the 2019 season at Bedford with 562 kills and a 98.4 serve percentage. She closed her prep career with 1,657 kills and 1,487 career digs. She prepped under Bedford coach Jodi Manore and played club volleyball at Maumee, Ohio-based Premier Academy under coach Jodi Schramm.
"Alyssa was a wonderful late addition to the 2020 class," said Mike Gawlik, who is entering his fifth season in charge of the program and in 2019 was named the Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year after leading CMU to the MAC West title. "She brings a wealth of experience and has learned from some of the top high school and club coaches. Her quality first-contact is what caught our eye initially, but we don't count her out as a savvy attacking option. It will certainly be fun to see her in maroon and gold and watch her develop."
Griner will join incoming freshman Kamryn Olson (setter/opposite), Austyn Deweese (middle blocker) and Elly Medendorp (middle blocker) to round out the Chippewas' 2020 recruiting class.
