BUFFALO, New York – Elizabeth Chlystun scored with just 53 seconds remaining on Sunday, lifting the Central Michigan soccer team to a 1-0 Mid-American Conference victory over Buffalo at UB Stadium.
The Chippewas won their fourth consecutive game, improving to 7-5-0, 4-2-0 MAC. Buffalo is 9-3-1, 3-2-1.
It was Chlystun's second goal of the season. Her first came in a 3-1 home win over Akron on Thursday.
CMU's Laila Arab took a long pass and ran in on the Buffalo goalkeeper from the left side at a hard angle. Her shot was partially deflected but got past the keeper and slowly rolled toward the goal line. A streaking Chlystun beat a defender and blasted it into the back of the net.
The Chippewas were outshot, 23-10, in the game. Seven of the Bulls' shots were on goal, while six of the Chippewas' were. The Bulls outshot CMU, 17-4, in the second half.
"It was a tale of two halves," CMU coach Jeremy Groves said. "I thought in the first half we were really good, we created some good chances; and then in the second half, Buffalo was really good and kind of took it to us a little bit. Obviously, we hit them with a late goal on a counterattack at the end."
CMU keeper Allison LaPoint made seven saves in posting her sixth shutout. She lowered her saves percentage to .853 and her goals against average to 0.80.
"All of our back four played really well again today," Groves said. "(LaPoint) made a couple of good saves, but the rest were from far out. She handled her services really, really well today."
Since an 0-3 start to the season, the Chippewas have won seven of their last nine starts. Eleven of CMU's 12 games have been decided by one goal.
"The way that our team fought today is a huge thing," Groves said. "It's the belief now that we're starting to gain; it's huge."
The Chippewas will be on the road again on Thursday, Oct. 14 (6 p.m.) when they go to Toledo for a MAC game. The Rockets were 7-4-2, 2-3-0 entering their game on Sunday at home against Ball State.
