Volleyball Falls In 5 At Ohio

ATHENS, Ohio -- The Central Michigan volleyball team fell in an intense five-set match to Ohio at the Bobcats' Convocation Center on Saturday.

The Chippewas, who on Friday snapped a three-match losing streak with a victory at Kent State, are 8-10, 2-4 Mid-American Conference. Ohio is 2-15, 2-4.

The Chippewas are scheduled to entertain defending league champion Bowling Green, 9-6, 5-0 MAC, in a weekend series beginning on Friday, Oct. 14 (6 p.m.) at McGuirk Arena.

CMU stepped on the gas right off the bat on Saturday, taking an early lead before Ohio strung together runs of its own to tie up at 10-10. Ohio continued to run with the lead and took the first set, 25-19.

The Chippewas found redemption in set two and flipped the score with a 25-19 victory, and then maintained an even third set. The Bobcats rallied late to take the set, 25-22.

CMU found its ground early in the fourth to even the match at two apiece, setting up the match-deciding fifth set. CMU led 8-6 and then Ohio scored nine of the next 11 points to take the set and the match.

Kills from Willer, Lauren Schrock and Lisbeth Rosario-Martinez assisted the Chippewas in the fifth set, where the Bobcats remained down by one point at the start of each rally. After an Ohio timeout at 8-6 for the Chippewas, the Bobcats strung together five straight points to uproot the match at 11-8.

The Chippewas made strong efforts to fight back, but succumbed to Ohio, 15-10.

Linnea Willer led CMU with 16 kills, while Lisbeth Rosario-Martinez and Savannah Thompson finished with 10 apiece. CMU setter Grace Butler finished with 28 assists, while Aly Gurtiza had 22 digs and Thompson added 21.
