MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The best in the Mid-American Conference will converge on Central Michigan's Jack Skoog Track on Friday and Saturday for the MAC Indoor Track & Field Championships.
The two-day meet begins on Friday at 10 a.m. Action gets underway on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
The meet comprises 12 women's teams and four men's squads. Eastern Michigan is the defending women's team champion, while Akron is the defending men's champ.
Senior Quiara Wheeler leads a strong contingent of Chippewas in the women's weight throw. Wheeler earlier this season set the program record with a toss of 21.51 meters, which ranks as the top throw among MAC competitors this season and ninth in the nation.
Wheeler goes into the meet ranked No. 1 in the conference in the weight throw, while CMU's Marissa Dunn is third and Maya Bennett is fifth. Last year at the indoor championships, Wheeler placed third, Bennett was sixth, and Dunn placed eighth.
A number of other Chippewas are ranked in the top 10 in several events, including pole vaulter Kasey Staley, who is third. Staley placed third in the event in the league meet a year ago.
CMU's Hayley Manners is ranked fourth in the long jump, while the Chippewas' Emma Fountain and Alexa Davis are fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 800-meter run.
Two Chippewas, Reghan Draper and Kaitlynn Rush, are among the top 10 in the 60-meter dash. Draper is sixth, Rush seventh.
CMU's Erin Howard is ranked seventh in the shot put. She was seventh in the event a year ago at the MAC meet. CMU freshman Emily Paupore is seventh in the 5,000 meters and eighth in the 3,000, and teammate Alyssa Vandegriff is ninth in the high jump.
