Sean Murphy-Bunting and Antonio Brown are Super Bowl champions.
Â
The two former Central Michigan Chippewas played major roles in helping the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeat the Kansas City Chiefs, 31-9, on Sunday at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa.
Â
It is the first Super Bowl title for both players. Murphy-Bunting, a cornerback, is in his second NFL season, while Brown, a wide receiver, is in his 10th. Murphy-Bunting played at CMU from 2016-18, Brown from 2007-09.
Â
Brown finished with five receptions for 22 yards and caught a 1-yard touchdown pass from Tom Brady with 6 seconds remaining in the first half, giving the Buccaneers a 21-6 lead at the break.
Â
It marked the second Super Bowl appearance for Brown, who was a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers when they lost to the Green Bay Packers, 31-25, in Super Bowl XLV at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Brown returned four kicks for 88 yards and four punts for 5 yards and caught one pass in that game.
Â
Murphy-Bunting made six tackles, tying for the second most on his team, and defended one pass – he batted away a pass in the end zone – as the Tampa Bay defense silenced an explosive Kansas City offense led by quarterback Patrick Mahomes, holding the Chiefs to three field goals.
Â
The defending-champion Chiefs feature two former Chippewas on their roster, offensive tackle Eric Fisher and defensive end Mike Danna.
Â
Fisher played at CMU from 2009-12 and became the first player from a Mid-American Conference school to be picked No. 1 in the NFL when the Chiefs took him in the 2013 NFL draft. He was injured in Kansas City's 38-24 victory over Buffalo in the AFC Championship Game and did not play in the Super Bowl.
Â
Danna, who played at CMU from 2016-18, was credited with one tackle for the Chiefs.
