Karlen Takes Over Career Points Lead In Lacrosse Loss

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Cincinnati scored three goals in the final 4:36 on Sunday in handing Central Michigan a 15-11 nonconference lacrosse loss at the CMU Soccer/Lacrosse Complex.
It completed an 0-2 weekend for the Chippewas (3-4), who on Friday dropped a 11-8 decision at home to 19th-ranked Louisville.
"The Louisville loss, throughout those 60 minutes I think our team got better and it was a good challenge," CMU coach Sara Tisdale said. "Unfortunately, today I felt like we didn't execute our scout, I felt like there was a large loss of trust for some reason that was a little unexpected on our part. Trust in our scout, trust in our teammates.
"When you open up the game and you turn the ball over unforced two times in a row it really sets the tone for the game and that's unfortunate."
The remainder of CMU's schedule is against Mid-American Conference opponents. The Chippewas are scheduled to go to Youngstown State on Friday, March 19 (7 p.m.).
Natalie Karlen and Tyra Prince scored three goals apiece to lead the Chippewas on Sunday against the Bearcats (4-2), who won their third-consecutive game.
Karlen also had an assist to up her season point total to 27 and her career total to 188, the best in the six-year history of the program. Karlen, a senior from Hagerstown, entered the game tied with Jocelyne Lemay, who played at CMU from 2016-19, for No. 1 in career points with 184.
The shots were even at 28 apiece and the Bearcats finished with 23 shots on goal to the Chippewas' 18. CMU finished with 10 free-position shots to the Bearcats' five, and had 26 ground balls to Cincinnati's 17.
CMU goalkeeper Sierra Savage, a freshman, made eight saves.
The game featured three ties and, though the Chippewas never led, they never trailed by more than two goals until Cincinnati's game-ending spurt.
While CMU managed to hang with the Bearcats, Tisdale said her team can – and will – be better.
"We're getting better, we're playing tougher opponents and I can hang my hat on that," she said. "But at the same time, we could have easily had two wins (on the weekend); today hurt a little more than Friday because I feel like we got better on Friday; today I'm not so sure."
The Chippewas have lost games to then-No. 25 Vanderbilt, the Bearcats and 19th-ranked Louisville on Friday. Their lone blowout loss came at Marquette.
"We easily could be 6-1," Tisdale said. "To know we were within striking distance of Vanderbilt, Cincinnati and Louisville, that's great to say that they could easily have been wins, but we've got to start turning those games into wins.
"We challenged (our players) today in the locker room. We said this team can go undefeated the rest of the year; that's how good this team is. But we've really got to take a deep breath, get back to some fundamentals and trust ourselves that we are as good as we know we are."
